As in previous years, VR 2003 will be held jointly with HAPTICS Symposium. The conference will take place in sunny Los Angeles in the springtime and is located in close proximity to California's leading centers in the areas of VR science, innovation and application. Contributions for all technical programs are due September 9, 2002. HAPTICS Deadline is September 4, 2002. Further details of submission instructions are available on line at: http://www.vr2003.org Skip Rizzo General Chair Director, Virtual Environments Laboratory Integrated Media Systems Center 3740 McClintock Ave., MC-2561 University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA. 90007 arizzo@usc.edu **** PAPERS **** IEEE-VR2003 seeks original, high-quality technical papers in all areas of virtual reality within either research or applied categories. Research papers should describe results that contribute to advancements in state-of-the-art virtual reality software, hardware, 3-D CHI, or systems development. Applied papers should address prototype or fielded virtual reality systems and include a concise description of the application area, insight into the relevant VR system implementation issues, and discuss the effectiveness of the VR system with respect to the application area. Papers must be in English, not exceed eight (8) pages in length and be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format described at http://computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm. Include the author's name(s), affiliations, addresses and electronic mail address. Papers concerning haptic interfaces may be presented in the main conference or in the Haptics Symposium. According to the author's wishes, papers in which haptics are the principal focus should be submitted to the Haptics Symposium . Papers in which haptic interfaces are part of a VR system of broader interest should be submitted to VR2003. All papers must be submitted electronically. Authors who do not have web access should contact one of the program co-chairs listed below. In the case of the Haptics Symposium, please contact Blake Hannaford or Hong Tan directly (see their contact information on the Haptics Sympsoium web page: http://www.hapticssymposium.org/) Authors may submit video materials to aid the program committee in the review of their submissions. Videos must be submitted following the instructions on video submissions (see http://www.vr2003.org/videos.html). In this case, indicate that videotapes have been submitted by checking the "with supporting video" check on the Electronic Submission Web Page. Interested parties are invited to submit proposals for interactive panel sessions with the goal of addressing a specific VR related topic from several perspectives. Panel sessions should not be structured as a series of individual stand-alone presentations but rather should address debatable material that is presented in a lively manner so as to involve all panel participants and engage the total audience. Panel proposals are to be submitted electronically and should include a title for the panel session, a brief description of the overall issues to be discussed (approximately 250 words each), and the names, contact information and short (approximately 100 word) biographies for the organizer and each panelist. Panelist should come from multiple organizations.
